| Tournament of Minds
The Tournament of Minds is a problem solving competition for teams of students of mixed ages from Years 7, 8, 9 and 10. This is a challenging and rewarding experience that requires problem solving, creative thinking and team work. This competition is open to schools all over Australia and has expanded internationally to New Zealand and Singapore.
To begin with, students work together on a Long Term Challenge for 6 weeks without the assistance from teachers, parents or peers. They are encouraged to explore possibilities and experiment with ideas. In the first round of the competition (Regional Finals), teams present solutions to their Long Term Challenge and are also required to participate in a Spontaneous Challenge. From the Regional Finals, successful teams progress to the State Finals and ultimately to the Australian Pacific Finals.
The 4 categories of the competition are Language Literature, Maths Engineering, Social Sciences and Applied Technology. This competition typically takes place each year at the start of Term 3.
John XXIII College has enjoyed great success in this competition. In 2008, students from John XXIII College represented WA in the Australasian Pacific Finals in Melbourne in 2 categories, Language Literature and Maths Engineering. The school’s Maths Engineering team was also the runner up winner of this competition in 2007 and the winner in 2004. The school has been the State winner in the Maths Engineering category for 6 times in 2000, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2007 and 2008. |
